At St Margaret's, the safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority. We have established comprehensive emergency procedures, including lockdown and fire evacuation protocols, to ensure swift and effective responses in different situations.

Fire drills are held at least termly to ensure children are familiar with the procedure and that these are reviewed and practiced to ensure preparedness.

Lockdown procedures are reviewed with staff to ensure procedures are robust and ensure that school is prepared for an emergency situation.  Lockdown drills are not currently undertaken with the children: this decision was made in conjunction with school governors as a result of careful consideration of the potential emotional impact on pupils as well as community concerns.  Instead, school has chosen to focus on prioritising preventative measures to reduce the likelihood of emergencies and empowering staff to take appropriate actions if necessary.  School worked with an external consultant to develop its Lockdown procedures several years ago and these are currently (Dec 2025/Jan 2026) being revisited to ensure best practice in relation to risk management and security planning to protect children and staff effectively. 

In addition to the above, we have a critical incident plan in place that outlines the steps we will take in the event of an emergency. In addition to those outlined above these include loss of utilities, community emergencies, cyber security incidents, public health emergencies, medical emergencies and violence or threats.  These plans are regularly reviewed to ensure we are prepared for emergencies and any adjustments made as necessary.
